- OUR HISTORY and MISSION-
Halau 'O Moanike'ala, a local non-profit organization in Las Vegas, Nevada, was founded in 1993. The name means "the sweet fragrance blown in by the wind." The mission and purpose of the halau is to preserve and perpetuate the polynesian culture through its music, songs, and dances, and to teach students values and instill in them the traditions of a proud heritage. Being so far away from our homeland, many of us yearn for more knowledge of our culture and wish our children to learn the language and the artform that is unique to Polynesia. People of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to learn our culture.
On May 6, 2002, Our Kumu and Halau members danced (as a Halau) for the last time at Lei Day Las Vegas 2002. Our Kumu announced on that day that Halau 'O Moanikela would be no more as she moves on to other interests in her life. To anyone and everyone who has been a member or who has supported this great 'Ohana, we say MAHALO NUI LOA!
